United Mining Exploration Commission: A group of friends playing JumpGate-- "a MMORPG that launched smoothly, breaks from fantasy character setting, emphasizes PvP, and is the first persistent world space simulator that nobody talks about." ~Scorch

Let me say unequivocally that I love the game. However, it has what I would consider to be the *usual amount* of CTD problems, annoying bugs, stuck character problems, broken missions and dysfunctional content of any new MMORPG (translate: LOTS).

It also has the obligatory nerfing issues and the flamewars that ensue. PC pirates (aka PK'ers) accuse CCP of favoring the miners (aka carebears) and vice versa.

My advice is to stay solo for a while, mine, do missions, outfit a decent fighting frigate (one that requires level 3 skill i.e. Punisher, Merlin, Rifter, etc) try your hand at hunting NPC pirates until you can handle yourself in 0.5 space by yourself. See if you can handle (or even enjoy) hunting NPCs in .4 or .3 where they fire missles at you. Stay out of 0.0 (except for travel, and only when necessary), even if you get your own cruiser. Soloing in 0.0 takes practice, good equipment and skill.

Once you know what you like to do, find a corporation to join. If you want to be a "cog", join a big corporation with a strong presence in the 0.0 regions (Stain, Venal, Curse, etc) because that's where some of the best action is and will always be. If you want to be a "wheel", join a smaller corp that is or plans to operate in 0.0.

Find a corp that has a website & good organization, where group mining and/or hunting operations are not difficult to get into. Also, it's good to find a corp that participates in patrols & action with the local
alliance (or *against* if you've the rebel in you :).

Too many players get stuck in a rut -- mine mine mine hunt hunt hunt mission missin mission and wind up after a month going "what's the point?" A good corp is the solution to that problem.

The gist? community. just like any MMOG. That's pretty much ALL the point to paying per month. Unfortunately, most "corps/squads/guilds" have a revolving door policy towards storyline...I don't really blame them though. (writing good stories is HARD)
