hey, folks! Okay, i really should have done this ages ago. Anyways, this thread is about IRC which stands for "Internet Relay Chat" [read: real-time bulletin board system; "usenet-on-crack"]Here are the instructions on how to get to our channels:
1. first of all download and install the program.
2. register if you want...or wait (it's donation. i think i gave $10 or 20 i forget, but that was after i used it for years for free)
3. run it. you'll see this:

4. enter your details as shown on that popup (you'll notice i smurfed the stupid info)
5. what you want next is to connect to the proper server.

6. After that you'll see this:

7. just type in #Jumpgate (or #homeworld if you want to join that community too)
8. Finally you'll see this:

craplink isn't an official (as in ND/Themis sanctioned) one, but it's not exactly an unpopular one, either.

Then there are a few EU JG IRC channels on QuakeNet as well, namely #jumpgate, #jumpgate.de, #jumpgate.uk and #jumpgate.rp (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

Just connect into Quakenet and there channels #jumpgate and #jumpgate.de if you wanna find OP's then join into #jumpgate.help. hope this helps a bit

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Servers

Austnet IRC - #Relic

Note: You'll need an IRC client like mIRC to connect. If you've got a client installed, you should be able to click the above link and be automatically connected to the correct server and channel.

To setup the client manually install mIRC first then start up the program and go to

File --> Options.

Click on the Connect menu item on the left and use the drop down box to find an ausnet server, then click "connect to irc server" below that.

Once you have connected, type: /join #relic in the dialogue field at the bottom of the mIRC client and you'll be able to join us!

#Relic is the IRC channel promoted by this site, to be a channel where anyone can come in and have any of their questions answered or to merely have a chat. Some of the devs (and even ex devs) pop into irc on a regular basis so you may even have the chance to say hello to a relic developer! It's ok they don't bite..

Footnote:

#Relic and #Homeworld.

The #Relic channel is setup to welcome newcomers to the community and to IRC in general. It's a place where the operators and members are there to help you with any questions you may have about any of relic's games, be they technical in nature or merely discussing strategy, as well as merely chatting about general everyday stuff in a friendly atmosphere.

There is however another channel dedicated to the Homeworld community. #Homeworld. This channel has a long and colorful history, having been around for over 4 years across many servers with many different members and indeed owners.

#Homeworld is not by any stretch of the imagination, for newcomers to just dive into. It's where all us old time Homeworlders hang out and banter all day long. You'll find alot of the mods and old school members in there, but be warned if you are new to irc, get your feet wet first in #Relic, where you can be shown the ropes first. If you're an old hand at irc and know how long time channels can be, then by all means jump right in, but enter at your own risk

The only 2 rules upheld in the #Homeworld channel are those of Warez and Porn.

yeah yeah...dyn the anal-retentive wannabe poopyhead. Basically, the practical rule of thumb is know the moderator high ranks are mostly politiking freakazoids not worth pissing off (well, sometimes it's REALLY worth it)
course, yer talking to someone who thinks baNNage is a medal of honour

hi Ara; craplink is deadlink, eh? thx. yeah, until i get an update from people who do actually frequent a JG IRC channel (either in this thread or on the official forums,) i'm afraid we're out of luck
might want to query on JG forums...i lurk occasionally and will probably spot it
*shrug* I just help people figure out HOW, not the where, who, when, why
