How i got Privateer2 to actually run with sound, decent speed and even screenshots
(topic split from this thread)

okay, MSDOS tweaking is driving me nuts. well, i'm using win98SE and have discovered my MS-DOS mode option in a program's advanced properties does a damned good job of setting me up. (didn't use to trust that bollox, but now i've forgotten all i learnt about DOS waaaah)

tusk bleh. that didn't work like advertised. okay, so i'm going to create a boot diskette with an autoexec.bat and config.sys modelled on that MS-DOS mode autodetection thing. (copy&paste verbatim)
Code:
===config sys===
DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
DeviceHigh=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.Exe

===autoexec bat======

SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
SET CLASSPATH="C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\ext\QTJava.zip"
SET QTJAVA="C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\ext\QTJava.zip"
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\mouse.exe
LoadHigh C:\WINDOWS\SmartDrv

dunno wtf is with the stupid, "java" stuff. anyways, the above is just an example of what my own computer thought i should have for MS-DOS mode emulation...The thing i'll be doing with this "boot diskette" is going full on dos, because the picture thingie i posted doesn't work as great. (Even after doing that i've still going to be sweating over the darned sound drivers. ech.)
X_X yuck. okay, so that mouse driver needed dos translation into c:\progra~1\etc..., plus i had to add "c:" and "cd \privat2" to the end (with "@echo off" at the beginning)
    except i was right about the stupid sound driver. i got a

blerg...off to www.google.com i go. hmmmmm. apparently i have a creative SBlive! sound card that needs some major work, so say's this informative webpage.
GRR when i tried doing that "SBESET" thing that site told me to do i got

*sigh* off the google again...hmmm apparently i'm supposed to set the path to ctsyn.ini in the autoexec.bat oh joy.
:party: w00t omg i don't believe it actually worked. weeeeeee okay, now all i gotta do is get the cpu speed down to managable levels, and that's where "moslo" comes in. (we'll need the DOS version only)
Code:
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
rem apparently i needed the below to even start buggering with the sound
SET CTSYN=c:\windows
rem the below needed the game directory added
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;c:\privat2
rem the below really needed a civrip
rem SET CLASSPATH="C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\ext\QTJava.zip"
rem SET QTJAVA="C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\ext\QTJava.zip"
rem the below needed to be altered
rem SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
rem the below 3 lines care of http://proasm.totalconversions.com/prosbdos.html
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
LoadHigh C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 4000
rem the below needed to be DOS translated ~1
C:\Progra~1\Logitech\MouseW~1\mouse.exe
cd c:\privat2
rem the below is Video Thief. search for it on google
vthief
rem the below is Moslo. search for it on google
moslo /20 dark.exe
beware of video thief as it's buggy. i'd recommend disabling it. (it works great, except priv2 doesn't perform too great)
