:?: Editing squad pages...
OK...I'm very new to this, so I'll need a certain level of detail. While I'm no techno-geek, I'm a quck learn. So...I want to edit my squad page but I don't know how. Could somebody who has the patience set me up with a primer? I have webspace available and I have MS Front Page as well. I think I can figure out some of the stuff, but how do I get changes to the JOSSH squad page? OK...I'm using Dreamweaver 2 to edit my squad pagen not Front Page (long story). I have all the files saved and the page looks OK. I've re-sized some of the cells, changed some colors around, I even inserted a pic (I can remove the pic to make things easier for now). I just don't know how exactly to tranfer these changes to JOSSH. I mean, how can I change the page when I 'View Source' so that it saves to JOSSH? What about pics?...Please understand that I'm winging it and learning as I go, so the more specific the better. I appreciate everyone's patience.

8ball 1) Go to your squad page and click the "Edit/Update" link that can be found under the link to apply to the squad, on the right side, under the roster.
2) Enter your callsign and password, the same as you use in the game, to access the squad editor page.
3) This page is divided into multiple functionnalities, but there are four sections that can be used liberally to create your page. These are:
a) The directives, in "General Squad Data"
b) News update 1 details
c) News update 2 details
d) News update 3 details
Each of these are basically a separate "page component" that you can define by using a HTML file that you edit externally for each section, then you just copy the code you edited and paste it into the form text input boxes corresponding to those particular components. Make sure you take everything in the code between the <body> and </body> tags, as these are already factored in by the Jossh program.
4) Make changes to one item at a time, as doing multiple changes may not be processed properly due to HTML limitations of the Jossh client-end page, then click the "Update squad" button at the bottom of the page to register these changes. That's pretty much all there is to it, creativity and imagination aside. Hope this helps.

arrow To clarify the answers a little bit, you cannot upload your saved files to jossh. You have to cut and paste between your editor and the edit page forms on the jossh site.

:?: OK...this has been very helpful and I thank everyone for their input. Now, I have run into a couple of barriers. I've got this green bar with a time/date stamp at the bottom of my directive table that I cannot get rid of. I've got some table misalignments. Take a look at the =Lazarus= page and you'll see what I mean. And I wanna learn how to trick out my page like I see on other pages. Nothing real fancy, just dress it up a little. How do I get pictures on the page? How do I change the all the happy horseshit that JOSSH appears to have "hard coded" (I'm fishing for terminology here). Can I change all the aspects of the template? What about URLs?

8ball here is a really cool page to that can help you out:
Lisa Explain's It All *warning! my1stwebsite sp33k!*
Beware though, the site is very colorful. Most of the jossh squadpage is hard coded. Im not sure about the time/date stamp thing, but if you empty out the boxes for your news headlines, it should go away. If not, you just have to work with the design and find something to put there that looks natural. To get pictures to work, you need to have them hosted somewhere. If you don't have a host, just ask, I could probably handle it.

arrow The pictures you see on the JOSSH squad pages are just links to pictures hosted elsewhere, you'll need to use your personal webspace to upload the pictures then tell JOSSH where to look for them using CDK's sugestions. The limitations of the JOSSH system have made it desirable for most squads to have a second squad page, hosted on a 3rd party site, containing most of the functionality, such as forums, chat rooms, ect. For many squads JOSSH is just a quick and dirty intro to the squad with links to the 3rd party site.

rant
Also, note that the JG squad pages on JOSSH only support basic HTML. There's no support for anything like Java or JavaShi^H^Hcript, thanks to some pudknockers who thought it was cute to set up browser-hijacking code on their pages, way back in beta.

:?: OK...how do I link the information on the JOSSH page to my web page so that it updates automatically?

8ball Just to be absolutely positively clear on this: You Cannot Upload a finished file to your Jossh Squadpage. What you can do however, is upload your tables, or whatever content you have. But not directly. You have to open up your squadpage and go in to edit it. Take what you created in dreamweaver/frontpage and past it into one of the forms on the page...There are two basic parts to the page, one lets you put in content the other lets you define colors. Just type in a few words in the different boxes to see which box corresponds to which part of the page. You cant change the overall layout of the page. Some parts of the page are "hardcoded" to be certain way, you will only be able to change what Jossh allows you to. The overall color of your page will need to be set using the Jossh controls.

arrow For images, just use <img src="image url">. You don't need a </img> closing tag. You don't need the border, and if you use an image of proper size to begin with, you don't need to use the width or height either as the image will automatically be displayed in its full size, although you could use them to reduce the size of an image that's too large. Personally, I'd reduce the size of the image to begin with, and use it resized. You can center a small image inside a table like so:
<table width="100%" border="0">
<tr>
<td align="center">
<img src="url for image">
</td>
</tr>
</table>
To use links within your text would look something like this: To go to this place click <a href="http://www.url.com">here</a>. This will make only the word "here" link to the site. That's the basics, nice and simple. Feel free to check out my squad page's source code to see how I did things. Hope this helps

I'll try to flesh this topic out a bit more. never really bothered to deal with this till now.

http://support.shaw.ca/webspace/htmltutorial.htm
that's a really nice introduction to making your own webpage. short, sweet, smart

http://www.webmonkey.com
most recommended site. though the least intuitive. (discovery process)

http://snowwhite.it.brighton.ac.uk/~mas/mas/courses/html/html1.html
a really enjoyable interactive tutorial ("hands on" approach)

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/primer_1.html
another introduction. this time it's written in the vernacular and very verbose

Squad Page
I made a new squad - Asylum. Look at the squad boards later today, Ill be advertising.

However thats not the point of this post. I need to know if anyone could give me a quick crash course (a reply or a pm) on how to code the stuff in the squad pages such as text effects (bold, italic, underline), things like news boxes (I think theyre called), paragraph breaks, and the other things that you can do. I dont know any code or any programming so I have no idea how to do this. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the "news boxes" you are refering to are tables. Webmonkey has tons of info on the HTML coding.

The squad pages seem to be built around HTML 3.0/3.1. When I set up the UZI page, I tried some HTML 4.0 tags and they did not work.

Webmonkey is teh uberest when it comes to HTML tag info.

Also, you can right-click on any squadpage and select the "view Source" option and it will show you the coding for the pages, you just have to sort through the stock coding.
