Argh... don't mention beacons to new pilots without mentioning the codes of conduct that go with them.

Beacons are in evry sector, except for station sectors. They are communications devices that have to be 'tuned' to a frequency. They are tuned to a frequency by flying through them with a BCU (Beacon Control Unit) equipped. The colour of the BCU tells you which faction it is from, and what faction frequency you will tune the beacon to.

You get experience for tuning a beacon and it staying tuned for a length of time, but only if you tune the beacon with a BCU which is from your faction. To make it clearer; if you tune a beacon using a BCU which is not from the same faction as you, you will get no experience.

You get more experience if you tune beacons which are in other faction's space, or neutral space.

Every two hours, a beacon will loose its tuning and revert to a 'grey' or 'neutral' state. When it is in this state anyone with a BCU can tune it.

If a BCU is already tuned to another faction's frequency, you must go into Honour Guard mode to tune it to your own. You cannot tune a beacon which is already the colour of the BCU you are using.

If you switch to the Honour Guard mode you can be attacked by other Honour Guard pilots with no reprisals. This makes it very dangerous, especially for newer players.

Neutral space and other faction's space are both dangerous because people don't want you flipping 'their' beacons. They are quite likely to try and kill you if you do.

The exception to this is OV, who try and kill anyone who tunes an Octavian tuned (red) beacon, anywhere. Nasty, huh? :D

Beacons are often referred to as 'beeks'. Tuning a beacon is also known as 'flipping' or just 'getting', eg:

"Get the Gurge, it's gone blue"

Hope this helps,

How do i use a BCU?
