Vendetta is currently in what they call "only an engine test, and is not representative of the final game for which the engine is being designed." It is a free 50MB dl at this time. Looks pretty, and has 2 modes, one uses RL newtonian physics (the actual physics fodation mode) from what I read, but has an arcade mode that allows people easier control over their ship (ship only goes the direction you are pointing).

Max cargo is 16...interesting.

Game can be played in Windows, MAC and Linux.

Vision for Vendetta:
Quote:
Vendetta is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in development by Guild Software, Inc. This game will allow players to create characters in a vast, futuristic universe. The game itself will take place largely in space, allowing players to pilot ships across a sprawling, unexplored universe. The gameplay philosophy is centered around giving the player as much freedom as possible. An open ended, skill based character system will allow the user to pursue their own direction, within the context of the setting. The forward progression of the storyline, while somewhat pre-scripted, will allow for great variation depending on the actions of players. Wars may be won or lost, empires may conquer or fall. For those willing to brave the unknown, the thousands of unexplored systems surrounding "known" space could yield riches.. or death.

Planned Features:

  • A technologically advanced 3D engine, developed from scratch to produce an immersive experience across a wide variety of systems.
  • Multiplatform support with simultaneous release on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
  • A fully realtime flight model and combat system brings the intensity and immersion of FPS-style PvP and PvNPC battle action, set against the backdrop of a massively multiplayer universe.
  • A range of highly configurable ships, from small fighters to massive capital, freighter and transport craft.
  • An open ended skill and faction system will permit great variability in a character's role in the universe.
  • A dynamic economy, affected by supply and demand and the political climate of the universe.
  • Extensive communications system, including chat and instant messaging capabilities
  • In-game news system to keep track of current events.
  • User defined missions permit traders to find combat escorts, and visa versa.
  • Group play: team up to control separate defense turrets on a capital ship, or launch in a fighter from its docking bay to enter the fray more directly. Escort the trading freighter of a friend, or lie in wait to pirate the convoys of your enemy.
  • Player-run Guilds allow characters to coordinate on a large scale.
  • Mine for minerals, establish trade routes, and build a financial empire.
  • Explore the unknown. Discover new trade routes, resources, map new systems, perhaps even discovering new races and forms of life?
  • Continual expansion of the game features, after release.

The Vendetta™ TEST

The Vendetta TEST is best considered a separate product from the Vendetta MMORPG. Built as a real-world development testbed, the Test can vary greatly from week to week, adding and removing various simplified gameplay concepts (such as "powerups" and "capture the flag") to provide some entertainment value to the engine. The TEST is not at all representative of the goals or design concepts intended for the final game. It is not a "Beta" or even an "Alpha". Again, it is best to consider it a separate project.

That said, the Test is usually an entertaining game, constantly in development. In time, the Test will slowly evolve into the Vendetta MMORPG, changing greatly as it does so. Because it is so often in flux, bugs appear with regular frequency. However, thanks to the dedication of the Vendetta Test gaming community, the bugs are discovered and isolated quickly, allowing us to fix them in regular releases. User input is welcomed, and topics avidly debated on the Test messageboard.

In the long run, thanks to heavy playtesting and input from a large and diverse userbase, the Vendetta Test will help make the final MMORPG product into a more stable, fun, and polished product.

Controlling your ship:
Quote:
Vendetta uses a very powerful dual-flight model. By default, your ship is configured to fly in the direction it is facing, like a fighter jet. You can use the throttle controls to set your desired speed, and the ship's comptuer will automatically thrust in the right direction so that you move in the direction that you're facing, at the correct speed.

The default flight mode, "Arcade Mode", allows a great deal of manuverability, but for even greater control, you can switch to "Physics Mode". This disables your ship's auto-thrusters, causing it to behave more like a true space ship. In manual mode, you are not necessarily moving in the direction you're facing. Some people find this disorienting at first -- it is a bit like sliding around on wet ice. Once you get going, you keep moving until you thrust in a different direction. This is invaluable in a dogfight, since you can easily turn around and fire at someone who is chasing you without worrying about them catching up with you.

To help make flight easier in manual mode, you can bring your ship to a complete halt by using the auto-brakes. Your computer will automatically calculate the thrust needed to stop your ship.

Syndicatenet review. Eewww... QiS.

Well, it is in a test mode where they are basically testing some game mechanics that make it seem much more quakish. Really curious now how JG was just before it went live? If I remember right, it went through the same growth pattern where it was much like quake in space.

Ping really sux! Getting them anywhere from 500 to 3000 (just got a new server in and new code). Needless to say it is very jumpy right now. On the up-side, it looks pretty sweet, but unplayable for me atm.

Have to do a custom bind to the joystick throttle and roll axis, they're not using DriectX for those yet.

It's like the graphics that JG oughta be now, but lacking a solid network connection like JG. I'll never complain about being disco'd again. 8P

Hmm...disabled zone alarm and the pings range from 1 to 4000. But it looks like I can play it now :)

Looks pretty. From the screenshots at least. but, from following the forums its going to die.

That is, the big pull of these sorts of games is the sort of ambiance one expects to find. Lots of civilian traffic really makes a space based mmorpg come alive.

As it is, I see the same old buttmonkey opinions from wannabe pirates demanding that all cargo pilots not only live with the realities of immanent piracy, but actually suck their gut in and enjoy it.

As such, the game will quickly alienate all but the killer types, with no achiever/explorer/socializer types the killers will be left on the Vendetta forums wondering why they have no victims, and trying desperatly to organize player based marketing efforts.

The flight model seems ... wrong.

In arcade mode, your ship changes direction as fast as you can turn it. I keep crashing into stuff as I expect a degree of lateral drift.

In physics mode, well the "physics" is in a manner worse than Jumpgates as JG, while it had drag, had a real drag model such as could be found in a physics text book. Vendetta simply appears to have a velocity cap.

Perhaps it takes some getting used to, but it feels a lot less natural in flight than Jumpgate. I had a vague feeling I was driving some sort of 3D car around, which was not helped by the engine drone.

Neither mode works on a proper dual joystick throttle - the game expects a gamepad or single handed joystick type throttle such that the throttle stick is easilly left centered for zero accel, full forward for thrust forwards, full down for thrust backwards.

Which has the amusing consequence that one can fly backwards just as fast as forwards, which so far has allowed me my only 2 NPC kills thus far.
