A different set of tools is being considered to specifically allow players to voluntarily transfer ore, but it may not make it into EP2.

sure. and this at the same time as capital ships with turrets? don't think this is anything but vapourware, but we can always listen to white lies like this.

If UMEC as a squad has a consistent RP - it owuld be organizing mining missions to the less hectic unreg sectors. Many appear completely saturated with roids of a variety of types. At least as a noob to Jumpgate - flying through the now unregulated sectors - I could see in my head fleet mining operations taking place - small ships buzzing around between roids doing the actual mining. Other schips acting as scouts for unmined roids, and killing any conflux spawn. Large ships acting like resource controllers, collecting the ore mined by the collectors... and UMEC would obviously be the squad doing this squad oriented activity. And I wanted to be a part of it. UMEC was going to be my squad :)

However, several factors intervened.
1. the ore rich sectors were deregulated. Any large scale civilian operation is going to pose a tempting target for griefers looking for some quick n easy stat padding.

2. Ore mining is not lucrative enough to afford either the rick of dying, or simply the cost of a strong enough escort.

3. The way that mining is currently rewarded does not encourage this type of play: in order to earn factional PR, EXP or a credit bonus, it is necessary to take a mining mission. For a specific ore. In order to compete for the mining medals, the complete requirements for the medal must be sold to the station as a single lot. To prevent mission based exploits - until now - ore cannot be traded. (the ore transfer mechanism is still going to need some degree of exploit prevention). Transferring ore to another ship, selling it to a POS, transferring it to an ore processor - mean that you are not eligable for the mining mission bonuses (small as they may be).

4. Roids yield too little, and cool down too slow - even the apparently well stocked unregulated sectors will get stripped pretty damn quick. with sustained mining operations each particular roid is good for 2 units per hour. If mining operations are intended to supply the economy with 100 ucs of ore per hour (a very small number compared to how much cargo a single cargo pilot can move per hour) the sector will require a minimum of 50 roids.

5. All the effort is for naught. Co-operative Mining pilots do not get the satisfaction of completing missions. Mining pilots do not get the satisfaction of making buttloads of cash. Mining pilots do not get the satisfaction of contributing meaningfully to the economy as the amounts they generate for the amount of effort put in are miniscule.
